Wilderness

While most of your time will probably be spent in more civilized areas, you will almost certainly want to travel through the wilder areas at some point. While movement in the wilderness is similar to movement in 'normal' rooms, there are some notable differences.

When you enter the wilderness, you will see a map of all the terrain within your sight. Each square league of terrain is represented by two characters which give information about what is there. Certain terrain types will block sight (see help survey), but over flat terrain you should be able to see a number of squares based on your distance vision stat.

Speed through the wilderness is determined by your movement type (see moving) and your skills. Hiking skill will affect any wilderness movement, but there are also more specialized skills:

Mountaineering affects travel through mountain terrain.
Desert travel affects desert travel (notice a pattern?)
Forestry affects movement through heavy or light forests.
Swimming affects movement through water.
Swamp travel affects swamp movement.
Terrain types often have way in which you may interact with them. Try 'get stick' in the forest, or 'drink' in a river.

While in the wilderness, you will notice '#' symbols scattered sporadically about. These identify places of interest: towns, caves, churches, etc. If you come across a terrain square containing one of these, enter it (be sure you are standing to the right of the '#') and use the 'look' command. You should see something there--a path, a cave, or something similar. Use 'enter path' (or cave, etc.) to check it out.

Forestry

Forestry is the skill which determines your travel speed in forests. It is one type of hiking skill.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering is the skill which alows you to travel through mountainous terrains. It is one type of hiking skill.

Swimming

Swimming is a wilderness skill. When swimming you can swim for only a little while before your legs get tired and you drown. Now you can swim East, West, North, South, Up and Down. When you swim down you go under the water and you will need to hold your breath. Swimming up is only if you are under water and in need of air. If you are not good at swimming then you will swim more slowly and be more likely to accidentally swallow some water.

To hold your breath type 'hold breath'. This will stop you from gulping water, but you can only do it for a certain amount of time. You can also hold your breath while out of water (if you ever find a need to).
To start breathing again type 'breathe'.

Desert Travel

This skill determines your rate of movement through the desert. It is one type of hiking skill.

Swamp Travel

Swamp travel is the skill which allows you to travel through swampy terrains. It is one type of hiking skills.

Hiking

Hiking is a generalized movement skill useful for moving through all terrains. Although there are specific skills related to individual terrains, this skill goes hand in hand with the others.

Survey

Syntax:
survey

This command gives you an overhead view of what the terrain looks like immediately around you. You must be in the wilderness to use this command.
