Hunger

Syntax:
eat [object]

Everyone must eat in order to survive on Terrinor. If you don't get nourishment you'll soon find yourself growing slow, weak, and eventually passing out from starvation. Similar to real life, the gathering (or slaying) of your meal will at first take up a good bit of your time. Unless you happen to be wealthy enough to afford your meals from a pub or market, you must take care to provide for your next meal.

Many of the species on AL are omnivores, able to eat both meat and various plant species. There are also some carnivorous species that prefer only the flavor of meat above all else. Likewise, there are those species who are sickened by the sight of bloody meat and will instead eat only plant matter. Less commonly are the few who can obtain nourishment by standing in a patch of sunlight, having no need for the messy consumption of bits and pieces of plants and animals.

Not all edible things will be good for you to eat. Use your common sense when choosing your next meal. Beware of anything lying about as there are plenty of unsavory characters who have no qualms about pouring poison onto a tasty bit of food and wait for the next hapless victim to succumb.

Meat

Syntax:
butcher [corpse]

Butchering involves cutting a corpse into pieces of meat intended for eating or cooking. This requires a knife and patience to butcher the corpse. The time required to butcher a corpse is mainly dependent upon the size of the corpse, and the skill of the person who is butchering.
A larger corpse is easier to butcher, and a smaller one tougher. A fresh corpse and some skill in butchering will increase the amount of meat produced from butchering a corpse. Some knives may be better suited than others for this task so feel free to experiment with your cutlery.

If you can not carry all the meat you end up with, you can take a portion of it by typing:
get [x] stones of meat.

Herbs

Plants that are eaten to satisfy hunger are foods. They are both edible and have food value. For example, a tomato can be eaten raw or added into a recipe and thus, it is a food.

Herbs are edible plants that are known to have special properties. They do not have any food value but they are edible. For example, eating a handful of garlic will not satisfy your hunger very much but it will make your breath stink enough to keep unwanted people away from you. (Another less popular use of garlic is for added flavor in cooking.) In this way, garlic is not a plant with food value but has a special property, which classifies it as an herb.

If a plant is not edible, then it is neither an herb nor a food. It's just a regular old plant.

Forage

Syntax:
forage

The wilderness is full of many species of plants some of which are useful, and others which are not. Foraging through the vegetation is a good way to become familiar with the various plants that grow in this world. The forage command allows you to rummage through the vegetation in a particular spot and try to find something of interest. It is not always easy to find things since foraging is a general search for nothing in particular.

As you continue to forage through the vegetation, your knowledge of specific plants and your ability to find them again will slowly increase. You can also gather a specific plant to help target your search to the plant of interest.

Gathering

Syntax:
gather [plantname]

Many plants have properties, which are used in various aspects of everyday life. Before plants can be used, they must be properly collected. Gathering allows plants to be collected from their natural environments. The efficiency with which plants are gathered depends on several factors including the players' abilities and availability of the plant. Many plants are gatherable, particularly herbs.

You will find that plants and herbs are useful in many aspects of life on this world. As your knowledge of plants grows, you will slowly discover the potential that the vegetation holds.

Herb Lore

Much knowledge of useful plants has been passed down through oral tradition. In that spirit, herb lore provides additional information about plants that would come from sources such as legends or myths. It also represents knowledge accumulated as you practice gathering and learn more about herbs in general.
